Not too long ago our very own Peach (narrating the video) and our friend Al went down for three weeks to train in Brazil with our friends at Godoi Jiu Jitsu Club in Sao Paulo. If you’re unfamiliar with who Master Roberto Godoi is I suggest a quick trip to Google followed by you saying out loud, “Damn, that guy is a beast.”
More than just an opposing presence on the mat, he’s also graduated more black belts than can be listed in one sitting, is constantly developing new and progressive techniques, and still kicks ass at competitions (he just took Gold at the International Masters & Seniors Championships – in weight and absolute). Oh, and to top it off he’s a really good guy. That’s why when Peach asked him last minute to do a couple technique videos, the Master obliged. Unfortunately for Peach his Flip cam is probably being sold somewhere on Paulista Ave right now, but a friend whipped out her phone and grabbed some video for us. And I for one would rather have this nugget of gold, even if I had to learn it from stick figure drawings. Enjoy.
Some tips that Master Godoi drops:
1. Don’t go too high on the collar. Give yourself some slack so you can move around.
2. If your opponent doesn’t follow you around, sink the choke.
3. If they do sit through, follow them around keeping pressure and reach under the head to secure your grip to finish.
4. Stay tight. Pressure, pressure, pressure.
